A visit from Swedish growers

15 Swedish potato growers had yesterday made their way to Sunds.
They participated in a workshop about storing potatoes. How does antisprouting affect the potatoes? Temperature variations, fluctuations in the sugar contents and in the whole structure of our storehouses and different storing methods. Many different ideas about storing was discussed.

All in all a hopefully instructive day, both for the growers, but certainly also for our company.

Variety exhibition

Wednesday to Friday in week 45  Erik, Jannie and Torben were in Holland for the annual variety exhibition. This is the time of the year when all people in the potato industry are gathered in the area around Emmeloord. Variety owners and breeders open their doors and invite people in. Those who do not live in this area around Emmeloord travel and set up an exhibition to show their particular varieties.
Our agenda was mainly to visit the variety owners that we feel does the most in the crisps segment. We also looked at new upcoming varieties to our trial next year. We found a few varieties that we hope can be an option for future breeding.

Potato Europe

Erik and Jannie visited Potato Europe Sept. 14th, they could tell that it was hot and dry conditions in France. They could also tell of a great show as usual, where they also met many colleagues from the potato industry.

Early potatoes

FreiburgErik Thorsen and Jesper Poulsen has been on a trip down to the Southern Germany to look at the early Lady Rosetta, we have in contract. As you can see, they are a lot bigger than in Denmark. Note that they have pipes out for irrigation, it is a very rare sight in Denmark, but it fits well with their small fields, and they can irrigate a little at night if there is a risk of frost. Some might also notice the many stones that are in the field, this is one of the reasons why they can grow so early potatoes, the stones helps to retain on the heat in the soil.tidlige LR iFrei

A big project is completed

Projekt afslutning

Our project of making maps of all the working operations in the company is completed. This is a project that was decided to make since the company is in a steady growth and to gear the entire organization to the increased export and cooperation with our German subsidiary. Throughout the project there has been focused on strengthening the independence of the various departments in the company, and to be effective in reporting to the administration.

In cooperation with the firm Elevator2 and through the input and interviews with all employees. Manuals and workflow diagrams with associated work cards and check points to the processes for all working areas have been made.

After the project is completed we are holding weekly workshops to implement manuals and workflow diagrams for all the employees where we will understand all the different working areas.

In the future, these workflows will mean that the company can expand while maintaining the high quality and efficiency. At the same time, it will mean that all employees have a much better understanding of the entire company’s work and thereby strengthen the social capital.

Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S hopes that Fredsø Vognmandsforretning will be able to continue the fine development.

Here are some links from the election.

Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH

Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S have chosen to found a daughter company in Germany. The company is registred as Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH and is owned 100 % by Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S.

Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH will open September 7th 2013, in rented premises by RWG Hoya eG’s potato division. Kartoffelzentrum Hagen, Zum Bahnhof 2a, 31535 Hagen, Neustadt am Rübenberge.

There is made an agreement regarding rent of office and quality control facilities.

Director for Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH is Erik B. Thorsen, but the full responsibility regarding the operation is entrusted to the newly appointed operation manager for Southern Europe, Jesper B. Poulsen.

In 11 years Jesper has been employed as responsible for storing and production in Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S, therefore the concept which the company works by, is very well known for Jesper, and he will bring this concept to the daugther company in Germany.

Thorsens Chipskartofler Gmbh’s function is, as a service for the parent company, to take over all logistics and quality control regarding deliveries for Southern Europe and logistics and quality control regarding deliveries from suppliers and other partners in Germany.

Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH will not do any trading of potatoes, instead the operations in the company will be concentrated around logistics and quality control, so the service for costumers and suppliers will be even better.

All buying and selling of potatoes, will still be done, from the parent company Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S in Denmark.

In 2014 Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH will move the adress to similar premises in Steimbke.

RWG Hoya eG will build new facilities in Steimbke for storing, washing, grading and packing. These new facilities will be build during the next year.

Thorsens Chipskartofler GmbH will therefore get the possibility from 2014, to deliver the same kind of goods as delivered from Denmark now. It means washed and optic graded potatoes, and therefore no waste for the costumer.

Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S hopes that German suppliers, partners and Southern European costumers will like this new innitiativ, and it may be an advantage for everybody.

Visiting Italy

Because Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S has begone to sell an increasing quantity to Italy, Jesper, Erik and Jacob were visiting the Italian cooperators, and one of the factories there is delivered to.

Italy has a big production of crisps, and a big part of the potatoes for that are imported, caused by the hot climate, which makes storage very difficult, because the potatoes not will get firm for stock, when the harvest takes place in 25-30 degrees.

When the climate is different from the Scandinavian, the Italians handling of potatoes is different too, which challenges Thorsens Chipskertofler A/S’ normal procedure for handling and delivery.

The visit in Italy gave a good insight into how the potatoes were handled after Thorsens Chipskertofler A/S has delivered to the factory, and an understanding of, why they did as they did. Furthermore the relation between the participating from Thorsens Chipskartofler A/S and the cooperators from Italy were strengthened.
